Peterborough's Choice for Fracture Care
A fracture is a broken bone. Bones do not bend, and if too much force is placed on the bone it may break. Breaks can range from minor to severe, and the strategy to fix the bone or encourage healing will vary.
Common Treatments May include:
- Immobilisation in a cast
- Immobilisation in a walking boot or brace
- Splinting or Bracing
- Traction- used to align bones with pulling action
- External or Internal Fixation- Surgery to help align the bone with plates or pins as it heals.

Recovery
Fractures can take weeks to several months to heal. Some may require longer immobilisation. Other fracture types your doctor may tell you to start moving or do therapy when the bone partially healed.
Pain may improve before the fracture is strong enough to handle normal use. Your orthopaedic specialist will help guide you through the healing process.
During your recovery you will likely lose muscle strength and flexibility in the injured limb. Your doctor may recommend physiotherapy to help you restore normal muscle strength and flexibility.
